Taronze Washington (l) lands a solid left hook to Vance Garvey. |
Black Glove Promotion's Friday Night Fights was held at an intimate venue at Paul Quinn College. There was a good crowd. The ring was a puncher's ring, an 18 footer. Live music colored the event between fights.
The Main Event
The main event pitted junior middleweights Taronze Washington against Vance Garvey. Both men gave a solid effort. The champ started off strong and aggressive while the challenger was timid in the first round. The champ didn't sit between rounds. That is what is known as the “Preparation H” tactic. Both men were in good condition. The challenger is a south paw and wasn't able to keep his right foot outside of the champs left foot. This is a must for south paws it prevented him from squaring up with the champ to apply more effective punching. Despite the challenger scowled express the champ continued to win most of the rounds. The challenger showed signs of movement in the 3rd round. He would circle either right or left which circumvented the champs straight on approach. The challenger's stuttering offense showed a glimpses of good speed on occasion. The champ is the gambling type forgoing the jab, standing in front of his opponent and not setting any traps. This is not a good idea when you have a dangling chin. The champion retained his title despite these risks.

Charles Hatley
Dallas' Charles Hatley quickly dispatched journeyman Bradley Thompson. The fight lasted a couple of rounds. It should have been stopped after the two knock downs in the first round. Hatley is in a somewhat of a precarious position. He is fighting frequently, that's good, but the quality of opposition that is willing to step into the ring with Hatley is lacking.
Vasquez vs Curry
Hector Vasquez took on Forrest Curry in a four round bout. Vasquez had a large cheering section with signs. He is a well versed, fast starter and that helped him get a win. But I was more impressed with Curry. He was stronger, faster and I believe might have had a better outing if it had gone 6 or 8 rounds. Curry has some good basic skills and should not be discouraged by this loss. Many fights are won or lost during the match making process.
Every one fits into one of three body types. They can significantly factor in a fighter's success. The types are:
- Ecktomorphs (a thin, light bone structure)
- Mesomorphs (a medium sized bone structure)
- Endomorphs (a heavier, thicker bone structure).
Ecktomorphs, like Vasquez, have more challenges than other body types. They have thinner, longer muscles that are not as strong as the other body types. Still, tall thin fighters can carry a big punch like a Thomas Hearns. Curry on the other hand is a strong mesomorph; this may make things easier for him in the future. That is this seasoned writer’s personal opinion. Only time will tell the true tale of Vasquez’s and Curry’s future in the squared circle.
