Exciting Night of Fights (and Weather) in Lawton

Friday, May 15th boxing fans gathered in Lawton, Oklahoma for an exciting card presented by Comanche Nation Casino, catBox Entertainment and C3 Fights. Tracy Thomas of KXY Radio, announced the evening’s bouts to the packed house inside the 30,000 square foot EventTent provided by C3 Fights.

Tahdooahnippah vs. Wallace
Unfortunately, these two fighters spent longer on their fanfare entrances than they did in the ring. The Native American Boxing Council Super Middleweight Champion, George “Comanche Boy” Tahdooahnippah of Lawton, OK thrilled the spectators with his spirited arrival to the ring wearing a coyote fur and his title belt. The rhythmic beating of drums and war calls, a fantastic performance of an authentic Native Fancy War Dance in traditional costumes by three Native Americans that spanned at least three generations, and a live rapper with lyrics like, “Comanche Boy knockin’ you out,” were the catalysts that got the crowd on their feet and raising their voices. However, this hometown hero didn’t seem to intimidate his opponent, “Flawless” Dan Wallace who traveled from Detroit, MI with a 9-9 record.

At the bell, both men came out strong. Wallace stepping in and getting things started only to discover the Comanche Boy was ready and waiting. Sadly, both fighters had hardly even broken a sweat when the fight was stopped 42 seconds into round one by officials due to inclement weather. High velocity winds caused the EventTent to be unstable and the probable weather in the Lawton area caused official Gary Ritter to call the fight – No Contest. Later, Ritter stated that “so far it was a hell of a fight – could have gone either way.” Of course, fans and fighters were disappointed. C3 Fights promoter, Ron Tripp said, “I expected a KO. We’ll see in September.”

After the event, fighters were available for autographs and I spoke to George Tahdooahnippah. When asked how he felt about the fight being called, he responded, “What can you say about Mother Nature?” Upon mention of the scheduled rematch in September, George says, “We will finish it.” Wallace seems to agree. He stated, “I came to fight eight rounds. I prepared for eight rounds. A no contest holds me back from moving forward.”

The most this writer can say about this main event is that the taunting and smirks; overall cocky attitude of Wallace might serve him better if left in Michigan next time.

Brewer vs. Nash
Grady Brewer (24-11), another hometown favorite, set the stage for the main event with his own impressive entrance. The winner of the season two television series, The Contender, followed a procession of live rappers one with a modified Mohawk headdress rhymin’ about “Bad Boy” Brewer.

Reginald “Two Gun” Nash (9-21) from Chattanooga, TN got hit hard in round one. With one decent headshot it was really over before it began. The allotted six rounds was unnecessary, Nash went down only 44 seconds into round one – KO.

Grady said he “feels good” about the fight but “I didn’t really get to break a sweat, but I caught a good shot and it was over.” He’s looking forward to the future he wants to “keep it goin’. Get in better shape mentally and physically.” He’s one to watch for in the future.

Oliveria vs. Henderson
A member of the Great Menominee Nation, Marcus Oliveria showed to be a strong fighter; with an impressive record of 17-0 this is a guy I would go out of my way to see again. Isaiah “the Prophet” Henderson seemed to be a good match up for Oliveria upon appearances. Both fighters demonstrated quickness in the ring and had similar athletic builds.

The bout began with Henderson taking one to the head followed by a few body hits, but he held strong. Quickly into round two Henderson got knocked down but got up again. Oliveria tried to corner Henderson, but he wouldn’t stay cornered. However, only 42 seconds into round two Henderson took another strong headshot and the referee called the match. Oliveria’s strong experience proved to be too much for Henderson.

This was another short bout, but one of the more entertaining of the night. Fight fans stay on the lookout for more of both of these fighters.

Clark vs. Crittenden
John “Raging Lion” Clark (13-14) also traveled a few miles to Oklahoma from Huntington Beach, CA. The former NFL player for the Green Bay Packers definitely looks intimidating. This guy is huge and he has a fast swing. Eric Crittenden (2-8) of Clinton, MO must have been thinking the same thing because he spent most of round one acting like he was avoiding getting hit. The duck and run game continued into round two topped with Clark pushing Crittenden into the ropes often. Late into the second round Crittenden tires and begins to drop his hands. Round three finds Crittenden stuck in the corner taking rapid fire from Clark just before the bell. Finally, after hanging in there and giving all he had, Crittenden gets a KO and Clark claims the victory only 45 seconds into round four.

Clark says the trip from Cali was “worth it” and he feels pretty good about the fight. “The kid’s record wasn’t that good, but you can’t underestimate your opponent. He came to fight. He kept movin’ and I couldn’t get a good hit,” commented Clark afterwards.

Personally, I encourage anyone from Oklahoma, or any surrounding state, to mark your calendars for Clark’s next appearance. catBox entertainment is bringing him back in June to OKC’s Remington Park, you won’t want to miss that!

Cobb vs. Fish
John Fish from Guymon, OK wasn’t much of a competitor for Tyson “Tyger” Cobb of Wichita Falls, TX. Cobb’s 4-1 record was no match for Fish who has yet to win a bout at 0-1. Cobb’s powerful blows knocked Fish down three times in round one. Fish lacks the physical conditioning to take that kind of heat and the fight ended at 1:48 in round one with the KO.

Jones vs. Norwood
Terrance Jones and Sam Norwood claim Oklahoma City as their hometown. They met again tonight with the same final result they received in March when they faced each other in Newkirk, OK. This time Jones gets the job done a little quicker.

A slow start in round one, but then round two showed Jones making an early connection with a solid head blow. Halfway through round two Norwood suffers a bloody nose and begins to look unsteady. Jones persists though the round, possibly motivated by having Stephanie Dobbs to assist in his corner, and ends strong at the bell. Norwood enters round three obviously tired and a little dazed. Jones delivered repeated headshots and claims the KO with 2:02 into round three.

A Great Night of Boxing
It was definitely a great night of entertainment in the one-of-a-kind EventTent provided by C3 Fights, presented by catBOX Entertainment and the Comanche Nation Casino. Unfortunately, all three headliners were only in the ring for a short time. We can’t control the weather but we did get the chance to see some new faces from outside the Oklahoma area. Plus, we got a sneak peek at what’s in store for the future. There were some talented fighters here that we can be looking forward to seeing again on other cards. Fight fans . . . until then!
