Premier Boxing Club Coaches on Stage

(By Cyndi Sanchez)

“Lincoln Heights” a play about a Latino family torn apart by the dark side of a teenage life, is presenting its last performances for the season Friday May 16th through Sunday May 18th. The play will be performed at the Rose Marine Theatre, 1440 N. Main St, Fort Worth, TX 76106.

The writer and director Anthony Marquez is a local from Diamond Hill, who began studying drama at Tarrant County College from 1984-1986. He has been a director and choreographer for the dance and acting troupe Hot n Spicy.  He has appeared in many commercials, and has various television credits to his name.

He was approached by the Fort Worth Independent School District to write and direct a three minute gang awareness video which then led to a 38 minute short independent film Lincoln Heights. In 1997 Lincoln Heights was a finalist for the 18th annual Telly Awards. In 1998 Mr. Marquez began working for the Fort Worth ISD at Hubbard Heights Elementary School. He started a theatre arts program and directed many school plays for the students. At Hubbard Heights, Mr. Marquez developed a special bond with teachers, especially one teacher who inspired him to bring back “Lincoln Heights”, only this time it would be for the stage.

The play will feature cameo appearances by former World Featherweight Champion Stevie Cruz and Premier Boxing Club amateur coach Ricky Sanchez. Sanchez who went to high school with Marquez said “We play the role of boxing coaches in a tournament.  The show took me back in time and I’m very blessed to see my life change as well.  Anthony, Stevie, and I grew up in Diamond Hill, spending time together during our teenage years, that’s why this play brings back a lot of memories.”

Friday and Saturday, performance begins at 7:30 PM and Sunday at 2:00 PM; tickets are $12.00 and $7.00 for seniors.
