Mayweather vs. Cotto, Second Best Isn’t Bad

I can't speak for you, but I already know what I'll be doing on May 5; sitting in front of a high definition, big screen television, sipping on a cold brew, watching Floyd Mayweather and Miguel Cotto duke it out, on pay-per-view! This long anticipated matchup was confirmed on Wednesday, February 1. The fight will be held at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas, NV., on what has become boxing's biggest weekend of the calendar year; the celebration of "Cinco de Mayo".

You'd be hard pressed to find two more accomplished current pugilists than Mayweather (42-0, 26 KO's), who calls himself "Money May" or Cotto (37-2, 30 KO's), the fighting pride of Puerto Rico.

Floyd was a 1996 United States Olympian and Cotto represented his country likewise, in the 2000 Games. Both have fought a virtual who's who of elite level boxing talent. Floyd's claimed the scalps of Oscar Dela Hoya, Juan Manuel Marquez, Ricky Hatton, Victor Ortiz, Genaro Hernandez, Diego Corrales, Arturo Gatti, Jose Luis Castillo and many others. Cotto's dethroned the likes of Antonio Margarito, Ricardo Mayorga, Joshua Clottey, Randall Bailey, Carlos Quintana, and Paul Malignaggi. They share common opponents such as "Sugar Shane Mosley, Zab Judah, Demarcus "Chop Chop" Corley, Victoriano Sosa and Justin Juuko and you can add in Manny Pacquiao (arguably the best fighter on the planet) to Cotto’s ledger. Being truthful, you can argue that Cotto disposed of each of those common foes more impressively than Mayweather did.

They've also both won titles in multiple weight classes as well; 130, 135, 140, 147 and 154 for Mayweather, 140, 147 and 154 for Cotto. At stake will be Cotto's WBA super welterweight title.

“It will be a challenge for me to compete with him at this weight, but this is the type of test I thrive on and gives me the motivation to train even harder. I have no doubt in my mind that my title belt collection will increase once again and Cotto’s reign as champion will come to an end on May 5," said Mayweather. As always, Cotto was stoic in his response, “I am here to fight the biggest names in boxing. I’ve never ducked anyone or any challenge in front of me. I have accepted everything to give the fans what they like…great and exciting fights. That is what the sport of boxing is all about; making the fights that the fans want and deserve to see. On May 5, stay tuned, because I will convincingly beat Floyd Mayweather.”

As if this clash of first ballot future Hall of Famers wasn't enough, Golden Boy Promotions has also announced that Saul "Canelo" Alvarez will be featured on the undercard.
