| Hatley Brothers Headlining at the Fairmont In the world of business, the "Hatley Brothers" name is associated with roofing, construction and other ventures. In the boxing world, the Hatley brothers have forged a long, glorious path of destruction. On Saturday, August 21st, the Hatley brothers (Charles and Greg Jr.) will apply their penchant for punishment at the Mid-Cities Links’ 18th annual black-tie gala, at the Fairmont Hotel in downtown Dallas. The main event will feature Charles "The Future" Hatley (12-0, 10 KO's) in perhaps his toughest fight to date. Standing in the opposing corner will be Dumont "Dewey" Welliver (18-21-1, 6 KO's). While that record certainly doesn’t jump out at you, take a gander at who Welliver has bumped heads with in those 40 fights. Former world champions like Chad Dawson, Yori Boy Campas, Vince Phillips and Livinstone Bramble. Well respected pugilists like Carlos Borjorquez, Epifanio Mendoza, Anthony Thompson, Daniel Edouard and David Banks. Welliver’s been there, done that and isn't the least bit impressed by Hatley’s amateur pedigree. Greg "The Technician" Hatley, Jr. (0-1), every bit the accomplished ammy that his younger brother is, will be facing Arkansas’s Willie Bryant (pro debut). Hatley, Jr. lost a razor thin decision in his debut to Cleburne's Kentrelle Claibourne and is foaming at the mouth to get his first win. This writer doesn’t know anything about Mr. Bryant, but he’s in an unfortunate position. Also appearing will be 2004 United States Olympic alternate, Mark "Too Sharp" Davis (13-0, 4 KO’s) against the ultra tough, upset minded Justo Vallecillo (6-11, 3 KO’s). Trained by Tony Ayala, Sr., most will remember Vallecillo for beating "Handsome" Hector Beltran in February of this year, in what is North Texas Boxing’s "2010 Upset of the Year" thus far. As if that wasn’t enough, the opening bout is an intriguing match up between West Dallas’ own, Larry "Slomoshun" Smith (8-2, 6 KO’s) and Funkytown’s Forrest "Too Sweet" Curry (2-5). Both of these proud fighters are coming off of losses, so expect fireworks. |
