SWC 7

All sporting events have their good and bad nights. For example, game six of the recent NBA finals. With four minutes left to play the Lakers had solid control of the game and the only thing left was to watch the celebration. On the other hand, game seven of the NHL finals could go down as the most exciting two minutes the Stanly Cup history. SWC 7 might not have reached the NHL level but what a card it was.

Shalorus vs. Miller
Up for grabs in the main event was the SWC Welterweight title, Kamal Shalorus a wrestler took on Frisco’s Justin Miller, a BJJ fighter out of the Marcus Hicks MMA gym in Lewisville. Shalorus came out swinging for the fences with round house lefts and rights but Miller avoided most of them and landed a few of his own. Shalorus had side control near rounds end but didn’t do much damage. Round two started the say way until Miller got caught with a left hook that he couldn’t recover from. He took a few more punches while on his back until the ref stopped the fight at 32 seconds of the second.

Garcia vs. Barragan
The SWC Bantamweight title was between Steve Garcia of Houston with a boxing background and Frank Barragan, a muay thai fighter who also trains at the Marcus Hicks gym. They fought from a standup most of the way as Barragan hold his own against the boxer. Midway through the round Garcia landed a few good knees and punches but Barragan took them well. Near rounds end Garcia landed a right hand that dropped his opponent, the ref jumped in and stopped the fight at 2:59 of the first round. Barragan remained in the seated position for a while as doctors attended to him.

Pineda vs. Bedford
Johnny Bedford, another stable mate from the Hicks gym fought Daniel Pineda from Houston for the SWC Featherweight title. It was a pretty even match for the most part, both men getting half guard and landing good punches. Somewhere in the middle of the round Pineda got a bad cut over his left eye but the fight was never stopped. The second round was more of the same until Bedford got Pineda in a tri-angle but he never did tap. He remained what looked like an unconscious state for a while, leg shaking and breathing heavy. After the stoppage he was attended to by the fight doctors and was okay.

King vs. Boyd
Grudge matches always add a little more excitement as long as it’s on the up and up which seemed to be the case in the fifth bout. Dallas fighter Ira Boyd took on Austin’s Deuce King both free style fighters. For some reason, they don’t like each other and the opening minutes indicated this to be true. Both men came out throwing heavy punches looking to end the fight right as soon as possible. Once on the ground Boyd almost got a rear naked choke, but was King was able to get out and got side control. King then got Boyd in an arm bar, or less technical, a “chicken wing with a leg”. Boyd was forced to verbally tap out at 2:06 of the first round. Some day I’d like to know what the beef is between them.

Weathers vs. Cerra
What makes MMA so exciting is at any moment a spectacular knock out can occur when you least expect it. Diego Cerra a BJJ fighter from San Antonio was winning, not dominating against New Mexico’s Ran Weathers. He was landing some great leg kicks on Weathers but couldn’t land the big bomb, that bomb finally came but not from Cerra. Weathers landed a straight right hand that landed on his opponents right side cheek, Cerra took two steps back then collapsed backward on the floor. Weathers went after the downed fighter but the ref had seen enough and stopped it at 2:55 of round one.

In other fights:

Craycraft vs. Jones
Michael Craycraft of Dallas submitted Edwynn Jones of Houston be rear-naked choke at 1:07 of round one.

Mahon vs. Montoya
Josh Montoya won a unanimous decision over Jeremy Mahon in the second fight of the evening. Montoya had top control several times through out the fight but was not able to put him away. Mahon lost a point in the second round after a knee to the groin.

Rivera vs. Hinojosa
Jesus Rivera stopped Jerry Hinojosa at 2:02 of round one after several punches and elbows from a top control.

It was announced before the main event that newly crowned SWC Featherweight Champion Johnny Bedford would take on newly crowned SWC Bantamweight Champion Steve Garcia in the near future. What weight they would fight at was not mentioned.
