Steele Cage 3

Rarely does an MMA event in the DFW area draw that much excitement as Steele Cage 3 did last night. That is unless it’s a UFC fight or if its biggest stars Chuck Liddell just happened to be making an appearance. Even thou he wasn’t fighting, his presence were enough to half way pack the Frisco Star Center. Even before the fights began Liddell had them lining up for a quick photo and chance to meet the legend and UFC hall of famer. It was all possible thanks to Richard Steele, a hall of fame boxing referee himself and local Jeff Zimmerman for putting together a great show from top to bottom.

Also in attendance were Cowboy great and sponsor, Randy White who was plugging his BBQ place in Frisco.

The main event pitted Lewisville’s Joe Christopher (10-4) against Joey Gorczynkski (17-9) from Oklahoma for the Steele Cage Welterweight Championship. Although Christopher was the Brazilian Jujitsu artist in the match it was Gorczynkski who looked like the expert. Christopher kept muscling him for top control but it was Gorczynkski who sunk the submission moves. Once by guillotine and the other a rear naked choke, both times Christopher was able to pull a Houdini and fight on. After a few more submission tries Christopher finally got caught in rear naked choke he couldn’t get out of. The official time was 3:52 of the second round. It was the second time in as many fights that Christopher has come up short against Gorczynkski but I have no doubt we’ll see both these men fighting in main events in the near future.

The co-main event was not only fight of the night but also the most exciting live MMA fight I’ve had the pleasure of seeing. Joseph Sandoval (4-0) and Arlington’s Douglas Frey (8-4) fought toe to toe in a back and forth battle of wills. Frey got off early rocking his opponent with some nice punches and dropped him with a perfect knee from a muay thai chinch. Sandoval was in serous trouble and was close to being stopped but he somehow weathered the storm. Once back on his feet and he came back landing a few nice punches that hurt Frey and had him back peddling. Before rounds end it was Frey who came back this time, Hurting Sandoval as the bell rang. The second round was more of a boxing match until Sandoval connected with a few punches, and then a combination drove Frey across the ring. He then followed to another combination that sent him to the ground where he followed with a few more before the ref jumped in and stopped it at 2:04. Keep an eye out for both of these two fighters.
