Roberto Marroquin (12-0, 9 KO’s) of Dallas is North Texas Boxing’s #1 ranked pound for pound fighter and is promoted by Bob Arum of Top Rank, Inc. Top Rank also promotes the number one pound for pound fighter in the world, Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao (50-3-2, 38 KO’s). It is no surprise Marroquin is on the undercard of the March 13, 2010 super fight between the “Pacman” and Joshua Clottey (35-3, 20 KO’s), which will be held at the new Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. In his last fight against Robert Guillen (5-5-3), he won in the first round by knockout with a devastating body shot. His opponent for that night is another Dallas fighter, Sammy Sanchez (4-1-1 1 KO).

Thursday, March 4, at the Maple Avenue Boxing Gym, in downtown Dallas, Marroquin had his media day workout which is customary with these huge shows. When I asked how long he had been training for the fight, he said he basically just took a couple of days off from his last fight. He was scheduled and was training to fight eight rounds, but found out later that it would be six rounds instead.

According to Marroquin, the maximum weight to come into the fight was 124 pounds, and he was right on track to make the weight. He said had sparred with his opponent about a year and a half ago and that they were actually friends, but then he said, “Now it’s business.” Although he would not make a prediction on the fight, he knows that he must be cautious, but that he also was going into the ring to do what he has to do to win, whether it is a decision or a knockout. Thanks to an expected 40,000 plus fans in the “Death Star” and HBO‘s Pay per View, fight fans worldwide may get their first glimpse of a future world champion from Dallas, Texas. (030410)
