Black Glove’s All Star Weekend Results

For those who braved the area’s rare wintery road conditions Thursday night, they were treated to mix of knockouts and action pack battles at Black Gloves Promotion’s All Star Weekend at Gilley’s near the heart of downtown Dallas.

In the main event Oak Cliff’s own welterweight prospect Charles “the Future” Hatley moved to 10-0 (9 KO’s) while showcasing a dazzling display of speed, non-stop combinations, and accuracy to handedly outpoint Marcus Brashears now 7-13 (2 KO’s) of Amarillo. Pre-fight trash talking and confrontations seem to be an all too common theme in today’s boxing society but most confrontations are done in order to sell a few extra tickets. The confrontation between the two main event combatants at the weigh in the day before was clearly very real and carried both into the ring. While the fight was a one way physical torture routine for Brashears, his anger towards Hadley kept him standing after taking numerous blistering shots and suffering a flash, first round knockdown. Throughout the fight he continuously mocked and instigated Hatley. While these behaviors became the only effective maneuvering for Brashears it clearly wasn’t enough as all three judges scored the fight 80-71 (as did North Texas Boxing) in favor of Charles Hatley. This fight marked the first time that Hatley was extended the distance

In the co-main event of the evening Larry Smith of West Dallas boxed, circled, and countered his way to a unanimous decision over James Freeman of Vernon Texas in a middleweight contest. The fight followed the same course round after round with Smith using a precise jab and an occasional right or left hook counter to outland the brave and always advancing Freeman. Every round saw Freeman do his best work with a last moment 10-second flurry to close out the round but was not enough to unsettle the slick moving Smith. Two of the judges saw it 60-54 while the third judge scored it 59-55. With the loss Freeman sees his ledger fall to 5-2 (4 KO’s) moved to 9-1 (6 KO’s).

2008 Olympic Alternate Hector Vazquez of Dallas improved to 4-1 (2 KO’s) with a second round victory over John DeJean of Belmont. DeJean, now 3-3 3 (KO’s) started the fight aggressively and had early success landing straight shots. As the round wore on Vazquez started to find his rhythm by landing digging hooks to the body and straight right hands. The fight ended in the second round after a violent flurry and right hand ended the junior welter contest.

In the opening bout of the evening 3-time Dallas Golden Glove Champion and now professional prospect Fernando Rodriguez of Pleasant Grove improved to 2-0 (2 KO’s) when his fight with the very game Artis Walton of Amarillo ended in the third round. Walton started the fight fast with jabs and straight right hands. Guerrero quickly made adjustments to his game plan by focusing on the body. This continued in the second round and paid off in the third when he caught Walton with a violent head and body attack. The very capable Walton falls to a deceiving 0-2.
